PPC De Hoek Centenary Exhibition

PPC De Hoek Centenary Exhibition

In 2016, Johan Vorster, the General Manager of PPC De Hoek, approached the committee of Piketberg Museum about the possibility of an exhibition and a book about Pretoria Portland Cement’s 100 years in Piketberg. Cape Portland Cement bought this lime source from Hermon-Piketberg Lime Company in 1921 and in July 1922 the first cement was sold from this plant. De Hoek, named after the part of the farm Rietfontein, where the first limestone was discovered and was sold by Mr. Christiaan Liebenberg to CPC, forms a very important part of Piketberg and its surroundings.

After many negotiations, Prof. Matilda Burden, from the University of Stellenbosch, was approached to do the research for the project as well as write the accompanying book. After many months of research, which included interviews, plant visits, and much more, as well as construction work on the new exhibition space and many setbacks due to Covid-19, the exhibition was finally opened on 29 July 2022 at the Piketberg Museum. The coffee table book will be launched soon.
